GETTING STARTED
Get started
SBI is a free VS Code extension that runs Claude Code or Codex on your workspace and shows you the result. The CLI it runs is the one you installed.
- Install the extension
- Open a workspace folder
- Run “SBI: Run Agent” from the Command Palette (in Chat, “@sbi /claude” or “@sbi /codex”)
- Choose an Agent (Claude Code or Codex) and enter an instruction
- Check the result in the “SBI” Output panel and the notification
SBI does not send your data to Sanary.
No account, no telemetry. Communication is limited to 127.0.0.1 on your Mac.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is SBI free?
Yes. SBI is free and needs no account.
What does it run on?
macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon (arm64), and VS Code 1.100 or later. It does not run on Intel Macs, Windows, or Linux. You need the Claude Code CLI or the Codex CLI, whichever you use.
It says it cannot find Claude Code / Codex.
SBI cannot locate the CLI it should run. Set the full path in the VS Code settings sbi.claudeCodeExecutablePath / sbi.codexExecutablePath, or check the CLAUDE_CODE_EXECUTABLE_PATH / CODEX_EXECUTABLE_PATH environment variables, or your PATH. SBI never installs a CLI for you.
Does it work without SBB?
Yes. SBB (Sanary Build Bridge) is optional. Without it the Agent still runs normally, and the evaluation is shown as unavailable (never as approved).
It says “:8788 is in use.”
Another program is using port 8788. SBI’s bundled Runtime uses 127.0.0.1:8788. Quit that program and reload the VS Code window.
I see an “outdated Runtime” or “localRequestGuard” warning.
This appears when a Runtime that is already running (for example one embedded in an older SBB) does not have the newer safety check that refuses requests from web pages in your browser. It keeps working, and SBI does not stop or replace it. To use the bundled, newer Runtime, quit that older Runtime and reload the window.
What does SBI change? What happens when I disable or uninstall it?
To register Claude Code / Codex hooks, SBI edits ~/.claude/settings.json, ~/.codex/hooks.json (and a marked SBI block in ~/.codex/config.toml), and ~/.sbi/hooks. Everything else in them is kept. Disabling the extension or quitting VS Code writes nothing back. Uninstalling removes only what SBI added (run once, the next time VS Code starts).
Is it fine to open several VS Code windows?
Yes. All windows share one Runtime. If the window that started it closes, another window starts a new one within about twenty seconds; an Agent run that was going through the closed window’s Runtime is interrupted.
What about Xcode?
The SBI extension does not write to Xcode’s configuration. The SBI Runtime can observe Xcode’s built-in coding agents on the same Mac, read-only.
PRIVACY
Your privacy
SBI uses no account, no server storage and no analytics, and sends nothing to Sanary. Under the Sanary Privacy Policy, an app like that collects no personal information. Here is what SBI does on your Mac.
- Writes: SBI’s hook entries in
~/.claude/settings.jsonand~/.codex/hooks.json, a marked SBI block in~/.codex/config.toml, and~/.sbi/hooks/(a small helper for the hooks). - Reads: Claude Code’s session files (
~/.claude/sessions), Codex’s session transcripts (~/.codex/sessions), and file changes, debug sessions and terminal activity in the open workspace, as an “at work” signal. It never reads what you type in the terminal. - What a hook hands over: when a hook fires, your prompt, the working directory and the Agent’s last reply go to the SBI Runtime on your Mac and, if SBB is running, to SBB for evaluation.
If you use SBB, SBG and SBR
When SBB (which hosts SBG) is running, the SBI Runtime hands SBG on your Mac (127.0.0.1:8790) only the following.
- The workspace folder name, a one-way hash of its path, whether the workspace is open and at work, and whether Claude Code or Codex is running.
- For an Agent run that starts from an instruction sent by SBB or SBR: a short work status — the beginning of that instruction (up to 100 characters) and short result or SBB-note lines (up to 160 characters each).
- For Claude Code / Codex hooks: the first line of your prompt (up to 40 characters) and SBB’s short reason for its decision.
Your full prompts and replies are not sent to SBG (only to SBB, on your Mac, for evaluation). SBG keeps this in memory; the only things it stores are its pairing records and its Remote Access setting. If you pair the SBR iPhone app, SBG serves it, over your local network, only to your paired device, authenticated with the device credential issued at pairing. Neither SBI nor SBG sends any of it to a Sanary server.
